Dypsis lutescens, commonly known as the Areca Palm or Butterfly Palm, is a popular indoor and outdoor ornamental plant. This graceful palm features feathery, arching fronds with numerous narrow, green leaflets that create a lush, tropical appearance.
Origins: Dypsis lutescens is native to the tropical regions of Madagascar.
Care Tips: Choose a location with bright, indirect light. Remove yellow or brown fronds to maintain its appearance. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring and summer). Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide more space for growth.
Light Requirements: Areca Palms prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light levels but will grow more slowly. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering Requirements: Water the Areca Palm regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant’s growth slows.
Soil Requirements: Use well-draining potting soil with a mix of peat, pine bark, and perlite or sand. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Propagation: Propagate the Areca Palm by division. Carefully separate clumps of the plant at the root level and pot them individually. This is best done during the plant’s active growing season in spring or summer.
Humidity and Temperature Requirements: High humidity levels are ideal for the Areca Palm. Mist the leaves regularly or use a humidifier if the indoor air is dry. Maintain a temperature range between 18-24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 10°C and protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Additional information: We pack your houseplants in a sturdy box designed specifically for houseplants. The plants and potting soil are protected by a protective cover. The houseplants are secured in the box. This way, your houseplant will not only be delivered fresh and healthy, but also undamaged. All houseplants are carefully selected by our plant experts and shipped directly from our nursery. Each plant is unique and might differ from the one in the pictures.
